I don't think I'll forget that Saturday morning (8/1/09) when I got a text from my boy Gq Tha Teacha informing me that Baatin of Slum Village had passed away. I was in shock and very disturbed. I was hoping that it was just some kind of crazy rumor. But as I started getting more and more phone calls and texts about Baatin throughout the next hour I realized that this was sadly true. I can't front. The news of Baatin's passing messed me up. The same way that other Slum Village member Jay Dee aka J-Dilla upset me. Slum Village was and still is one of my favorite Hip Hop groups.

I'll never forget seeing Slum Village perform live when they opened up for Erykah Badu. The light man played Baatin by only having two spotlights. One for T3 and the other for Elzhi of Slum Village only. Baatin had to literally perform behind T3 and Elzhi or so close to them that he was almost touching them to get some of that spotlight. But he didn't miss a beat. Baatin was the highlight of the show for me. Exceeding Erykah Badu herself in my opinion. The passion Baatin exhibited in his rhymes and the showmanship he showed on stage with his poppin and robotic movements to the hard hitting J-Dilla production was second to none.

So it was only right that I took the time to honor and pay homage to the man Baatin Rasul Wasi on my show. Once Baatin passed away, alot of DJ's did tributes to him. And rightfully so. My goal was to bring something new to the host of Baatin tributes and give it to you "Vinyl Vybz" style!!! My Baatin tribute is full of Slum Village classics, unreleased songs, and Baatin solos. Not to mention an "Old to the New" segment where I play a portion of an original sample and then play the Hip Hop song that sampled from it, like I always do on Vinyl Vybz.

I admit that this was one of my favorite shows. I hope I did Baatin and Dilla proud. Please feel free to share this show with EVERY Slum Village fan you know and anybody that's not familiar with Slum Village because I think they will enjoy SV's music as well. Spread the word too about Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH to everyone that appreciates authentic Hip Hop music from the heart. I do this EVERY Tuesday from 6pm-8pm CST on www.playvybz.com. Check out the dopeness! Detroit stand up!!!
