The 2nd Volume continued to salute female MCs but at the end of the show I played 4 soulful bangas by female artists as well. I also played a few records featuring Heavy D that further cemented his legacy in Hip Hop.

This show aired live from midnight-2:00am London time on 5/20/09 on www.playvybz.com. This was the 1st and only show that I've been blessed to do live so far in London and I was amped! You could tell all in my voice! This was the 5th Vinyl Vybz show I had every done so my apologies for not being as "comfortable" on the mic as I am now. Not to mention I was VERY excited to be in London to do Vinyl Vybz Live and then perform at the Westbury with the rest of the Temporary Residents the following day. My adrenaline was pumping!!!

My apparent lack of skills on the mic compared to current shows aside, this show was INCREDIBLE! The music was DOPE but most importantly I was surrounded by family in the studio. Check out an appearance by the admiral of The Temporary Residents, DJ Johnny Rebel, and a SPECIAL performance by Lyrickal (the guy whose drop I play during every Old to the New segment). Lyrickal performed a 10 minute freestyle of rapping, singing, vocal scratches & instrumentation. And the scary part is that this is only a FRACTION of what this man is capable of. Trust me you DON'T want to miss this!!!

First & foremost I want to thank everyone who was hitting me up today saying how much they were looking forward to tonights show. It's an overwhelming & humbling feeling indeed! To all of my faithful listeners that hold me down every Tuesday I apologize for Vinyl Vybz not airing tonight. One of the few disadvantages of my radio station home being close to 4000 miles away is that I have NO control over situations like this. I'm confident that this show will air next Tuesday at it's normal slot. HOWEVER, I was very disappointed that my Gil Scott-Heron tribute didn't air tonight. Since the show was previously recorded and ready to go I see no reason in making my fam wait until NEXT week to hear it soooooo....HERE YOU GO!!!

Welcome to a special edition of Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH where I paid tribute to musical icon Gil Scott-Heron. This show is bittersweet, due to the fact that Gil Scott-Heron has passed away. But I wanted to take a moment to celebrate his work that’s influenced a massive amount of people for over 4 decades! I felt it’s my duty as a DJ to deliver a show paying homage to this legendary Soul, Jazz, & Spoken Word artist by playing some his finest work. While at the same time cookin up a DOPE show that you’ve come to expect every week on Vinyl Vybz.

I began the show with a Roots melody featuring some songs that I could envision Gil Scott-Heron collaborating on. Either through his spoken word or distinct singing voice. Then I played new music from the likes of Muhsinah, Skyzoo, Eric Roberson, DiViNe SeVeN, Elzhi & MORE. Not to mention an “Old to the New” featuring Da Youngsta’s and Das Efx rockin over the same sample.

The last hour is dedicated to Gil Scott-Heron! His body of work is MASSIVE so I picked a few of my personal favorites to play, along with the Hip Hop records that sampled from it. DOPENESS! For this show I played some Golden Era West Coast and East Coast music that I’m sure will have you reminiscing and thinking about the good ole days when life seemed more simple. I also showcased one of my favorite Hip Hop crews, the Hieroglyphics. And for the last half of the show I did a tribute to Stevie Wonder who celebrated his 61st birthday last month on May 13th. Thank you 1nce again for checking out Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH! I appreciate ya! :) I began with 4 Hip Hop songs that focused on the art of scratching. With the exception of my song, the other 3 songs were released in the early 90’s back when DJs’ shared the same billing as the MC. In some cases the DJ was even in the forefront. It was also during the time when if a MC didn’t have a DJ he was WACK. The DJ as the backbone of Hip Hop was heavily celebrated during this era and most Hip Hop records had at least one record showcasing their DJ. I miss those days! Turntablism in Hip Hop isn’t displayed now as often as it was in the 90’s but there are still artists who love and respect the artform. So expect to hear more of that on future shows.

I also played some rare joints from artists like Das EFX, The Nonce, Ghostface Killah, & Shaquille O’Neal (YES, Shaq put out some dope records. Don’t sleep). As well as some independent HEAT that you need to get familiar with and some brand spanking new music from some Hip Hop vets.

Peace & blessings! It brings me a great sense of pride knowing that tomorrow my wife & I will be celebrating our 3 year wedding anniversary. It is TRULY a blessing! In honor of our wedding anniversary we thought that it would be dope to share the music that we personally selected to be played during our wedding reception. We carefully planned and thought out this playlist and I was very proud of the outcome. The playlist not only showed our mutual love of music, but every song had sentimental value. From the 1st song "Affinity", which was the inspiration behind the engraving inside my wedding band. *My wife surprised me by engraving "Infinite Affinity"*. On December 26th 2010, the world lost a musical legend. Teena Marie (born Mary Christine Brockert) had over 3 decades of hits. I had the honor of doing a tribute to her on www.playvybz.com on January 11th, 2011. The feedback I got from the show was INCREDIBLE but Lady T's music speaks for itself.

The original show was split in 2 parts. The 1st hour I played golden era Hip Hop , as well as, present-day independent Hip Hop. The last hour I did my Teena Marie Tribute. Next week I’m switching things up a little bit with a new theme. I’m a Hip Hop head 1st and foremost but I LOVE all music! And although Vinyl Vybz is a Hip Hop / Soul show, I’m blessed to be on playvybz and be able to spread my wings from time to time and display my love for ALL music. I’m able to be a DJ and NOT a robot! So back in November I ended a Vinyl Vybz show with 4 pop records from the 80’s. From those 4 songs alone the positive feedback from you all was MASSIVE! What’s up family! Welcome to my 2nd annual Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH (Christmas Edition)! It’s truly a blessing to have you ride shotgun on my musical journey of Christmas melodies for another year . I dedicated more time this year to Christmas music than I did last year. About an hours worth this time. But similar to last years show I played some classic Soul, R&B, & Hip Hop Christmas songs. I also played a few that you may not be familiar with but I felt deserved a spot on last nights show. Peace and blessings fellow music headz! Welcome to the 1st edition of what I call Vinyl Vybz “is for the Children”. That’s 2 hours of Hip Hop and Soul music from children ONLY! I recently read an article about ODB’s upcoming 6th year anniversary of his passing on November 14th. While reading, I thought about how ODB rushed the stage at the Grammys after the Wu-Tang Clan didn’t win and he gave his infamous speech which included him declaring that “Wu-Tang is for the children”. Thus the name of this show!

So last night I played some obvious Hip Hop bangas from child MC’s like Chi-Ali, Illegal, ABC, & Shyheim. And since it’s my goal on Vinyl Vybz to not just play obvious music but also educate you on some DOPE music that may not be known. I played some heat from artists like A+, 2 Low, Whooliganz, & Quo to name a few. I also played a few CLASSIC Soul/R&B songs from some child crooners that you haven’t heard in a MINUTE!

Welcome to another weekly dosage of DOPENESS on Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH! I had a lot of fun doing tonights show. I put the spotlight on several independent artists who make INCREDIBLE music. I also played some well known Hip Hop CLASSICS that will have you reminiscing! Can it be all so simple? On Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH the answer is a resounding... YES!!!

Peace family! Welcome to the SECOND volume of the Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH (Ladies 1st Edition)! Prepare yourself for 2 hours of music from female artists EXCLUSIVELY! Now I said this on Volume I of my Ladies 1st show and my stance remains the same. There isn’t enough female representation of Hip Hop on the radio. Some may say its because there isn’t a lot of female MC’s making noise today but I beg to differ. Props to other DJ’s, shows, and programs like “My Mic Sounds Nice” who contribute in keeping the female MC torch burning. Word up!

For this show my goal was to give a brief timeline of female MC’s contributions to the Hip Hop game. I played music from different era’s from the 80’s,90’s & up into the present from the likes of Lauryn Hill, Bahamadia, MC Lyte, Jean Grae, & Queen Latifah to name a few. But you know how I get down on Vinyl Vybz so I never play just the obvious choices. I want to educate and expose you all to DOPE music EVERY week that you may not be familiar with so I made sure I included some more obscure records from the likes of N-Tyce, Champ MC, Finesse & Synquis, etc. I even did something I didn’t do on the 1st volume, and that’s play a few soul bangas for my soul heads that hold me down EVERY week!

What’s up fam! Welcome to a special edition of Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH! This time I present to you my 90’s Soul & R&B show. I’m always thinking of new and exciting themes for Vinyl Vybz to keep the show fresh and interesting. And since I got so much positive feedback on my "Vintage Soul" special highlighting 70’s Soul music, I thought it would be dope to fast forward a little to the 90’s. Not only was the 90’s a Golden Era for Hip Hop but A LOT of dope Soul and R&B music dropped during that time as well. So I wanted to give a small example of that within my 2 hour time slot.

I played a lot of 90’s Hip Hop CLASSICS from the likes of Black Moon, Mobb Deep, Diamond D, Nas, Ras Kass, the Pharcyde & ATCQ to name a few. Plus some new 2010 HEAT from Invincible & Waajeed, The Roots, Zo!, & Panacea. I ended the show with some feel good 90’s soul music that I’m sure you’re going to feel.

The last 4 songs I played tonight was a pre-lude to next weeks show. I’m always brainstorming trying to find new ways of keeping Vinyl Vybz fresh and interesting when it comes to the music I play. And although I’m a MAJOR Hip Hop head, I LOVE ALL music. It’s hard being a DJ if you don’t have an appreciation for all music. So I got another them-based show for next week. This time I’m doing a 90’s Soul / R&B special for all of my heads that miss that 90’s music. Don’t worry though, I’m not going too far left from the Vinyl Vybz format. You know how I do! I’m bringing it to you "Vinyl Vybz" style. YESSIR. I’m not going to give too much away but expect to hear BANGAS from Jamiroquai, Sweetback, Les Nubians, Aaliyah, & Maxwell to name a few. What’s up fam!!! Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to take this journey down memory lane with me. I had A LOT of fun doing this show. I did something tonight that I’ve never done before on Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH. I did what I like to call a “vintage soul” special where I played two hours of INCREDIBLE soul music from the 70’s and early 80’s. But of course I had to have it relate somehow to Hip Hop because that’s what Vinyl Vybz is primarily about…DOPE HIP HOP. So I played soul music that was sampled in classic Hip Hop records!!!

I decided to do this for several reasons. One because I thought it would be fun to do. But most importantly to pay homage to the great artists of yesteryear that played a HUGE part in shaping Hip Hop into what it’s known for today. Hip Hop owes a huge debt to these amazing artists so I wanted to use Vinyl Vybz as a platform to give these artists some shine. This show also serves as a history lesson as to the origins of some of your favorite Hip Hop songs. Sorta like a Hip Hop 101 if you will. :)

So join me as I take you down this soulful journey of soul classics that made the Hip Hop songs we love and cherish possible! I had A LOT of fun with this show! I had the honor of talking to the one and only soulstress Iman Williams as well as producer extraordinaire BusCrates 16 Bit Ensemble during the show! Their 1st album Organized Konfusion was released back in 1991. Prior to that though, Organized Konfusion shopped a 5 song demo in 1989 under the name (Simply II Positive MCs). You'll notice that one of the demo songs,"Prisoners of War", made it on the official debut album.

As I say with all of the demos that I hook you all up with on this blog, the sound quality isn't the best. But it's a VERY minor issue when you look at the big picture. Which is ANOTHER rare gem for all of my Hip Hop heads out there.

Omega Red & J-Fury "Directions" Music Video

Omega Red and J-Fury are two solo artists who are dope on the mic AND on the beats. Taking the theory of "2 heads are better than 1", they've decided to join forces for an upcoming project that I'm sure is going to be amazing. Both Omega Red and J-Fury have been creating dope Hip Hop for years so I'm excited to hear the finished project.

The first single and video to come from their collaboration is "Directions". A dope song that has that golden era appeal to it complete with a smooth sample and hard hitting drums and bassline that have that "boom bap" knock. The video stays true to the "good ole days" of Hip Hop when artists pride themselves on developing concepts for videos. Visual elements of Hip Hop are represented in this video as well from actual vinyl being shown, an MPC, and a recording studio complete with a sound board.

Omega Red and J-Fury are coming out the gate with some serious dopeness so I'm anticipating what they come out with next. Shout out to Omega Red and J-Fury for holding me down and giving me a cameo in this video! I appreciate you all letting me get my shine on. :)

What’s up family! Welcome to yet ANOTHER special edition of Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH! Well I like to think all of my Vinyl Vybz shows are special. :) But last night’s show was EXTRA special due to the fact that I had the honor of choppin' it up with the one and only Ladybug Mecca!!! She was ever so gracious to take the time out of her busy schedule to sit down and talk to me via telephone. Some of the topics that Ladybug Mecca discussed with me during the interview was her solo album Trip the Light Fantastic, her working and personal relationship with Guru (R.I.P), her Brazilian heritage & its influence on her music, as well as her current passion and love with DJing (DJ Ladybug Mek). What’s up! Thank you SO much for joining me for this Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH one year anniversary show featuring my crew, my partners-in-crime, my FAMILY the Temporary Residents!!! I had a GREAT time doing the show and it’s one that I’ll NEVER forget! The Temporary Residents flew across the pond from their hometown of London, ALL the way to my city Chicago to chop it up with me on Vinyl Vybz and I can’t thank them enough!

Not only did I have a dope conversation with the Temporary Residents but you know I also played some DOPE music. Welcome to my Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH (Guru Tribute)! I know there are several Guru tributes out there, and rightfully so. Guru deserves ALL the accolades. However, I wouldn’t feel comfortable calling myself a DJ and die-hard Guru / Gang Starr fan if I didn’t come with my own Guru tribute. Now the size of Gurus’ catalog of dope music is INSANE, which made it impossible to fit all of his music into a 2 hour show. But hopefully I did Guru and his legacy justice with the songs I’ve selected for this tribute, while at the same time featuring some Gang Starr and Guru BANGAS that you may not be familiar with. For example, the horn mix to Gang Starrs’ "DWYCK", "Now You’re Mine" (originally off the White Men Can’t Jump / Rap soundtrack) and the 12" white label "Doe In Advance".

I also featured some songs from Jazzmatazz ,Gurus’ solo project, where he worked with jazz legends to AMAZING results! And of course the Old to the New was in FULL effect! I featured "The ? Remainz" & "Mass Appeal" during this segment that not only showed Gurus’ partner , DJ Premier , genius on the boards but also showed the special chemistry that Guru and Preemo had which could NEVER be matched.

What’s up! Welcome to a special Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH show! This is my “Stop The Violence” edition, where I played 2 hours of nothing but anti-violence Hip Hop and Soul music and music that overall has a positive message. I also played some anti-drug music due to the fact that drugs play a MAJOR part in the violence that’s occurring on our streets. The idea of doing this show had been on my mind for months now but due to the recent rash of violence in my hometown of Chicago I felt that NOW was the time to make this idea of a “Stop The Violence” show a reality.

When you think of anti-violence Hip Hop music, Self-Destruction by the Stop The Violence Movement quickly comes to mind. So I HAD to kick the show of with that classic followed by the West Coast equivalent of Self-Destruction with We’re All in the Same Gang. The format of Vinyl Vybz for this special edition remained the same with some 80’s classics from Slick Rick as well as Grand Master Flash. Some under the radar BANGAS from Three Times Dope, Blackalicious, and Lord Finesse & DJ Mike Smooth. I played some soulful DOPENESS from DJ Jazzy Jeff ft. Raheem DeVaughn and the late, great Marvin Gaye. And some golden era classics from Main Source and Organized Konfusion to name a few. Oh, and I can’t forget the Old to the New which featured a classic from A Tribe Called Quest and the original sample that was performed by a living legend!!!

Golden Era DOPENESS! Produced by one of my favorite producers of this era who was HEAVILY slept on...K-Def! Legendary Hip Hop producer Marley Marl served as one of the Executive Producers of this classic.

Besides "How Nice I Am", the only other single and video that I'm aware of ,that World Renown released, was "Come Take A Ride". To my knowledge, the World Renown full length album was never released. A shame really because the 2 singles they released were DOPE! "How Nice I Am" was my favorite out the two with the SICK piano loop and the ill Phife (ATCQ)sample for the hook.

I REALLY miss the days of Yo! MTV Raps. The amount of Hip Hop legends that have performed on the Yo! MTV Raps stage is incredible. This performance of "DWYCK" by Gang Starr is one of my favorites. This is Hip Hop at its finest. No DATS or pre-recorded music. And no "MC" rapping over his pre-recorded rhymes. Just 2 turntables and a mic (DJ Premier going to WORK on the turntables with vinyl and Guru (RIP) getting buzy on the mic along with Nice & Smooth).

I still can't believe you are gone Guru. Despite all of the drama that has appeared in the media since your passing, NO ONE can take away your legacy and what you and DJ Premier contributed to Hip Hop. You and DJ Premier were definitely "one of the best yet". Rest in Peace Guru. SALUTE!

I’ve been thinking about doing a “Stop the Violence” show for a while now but due to the recent “50 Hours of Violence” that unfortunately took place in my city of Chicago, I felt that it’s better a time than any to do this show. Media is calling this the “50 Hours of Violence” because 40 people were shot in 2 days! It’s a very sad situation. So of course I’ll be playing the usual suspects like “Self Destruction” but you know how I do. I’ll be playing some slept on joints and classics that you haven’t heard in MINUTE. After watching this in the movie Scratch I went out and got this record immediately. The cover was pretty beat up but the music was still intact! :) The record DJ Z-Trip is using is Apollo 100 "Mad Mountain King (Hall of the Mountain King)". It's pretty dope! If you can find that Apollo 100 record I recommend coppin' it. And while you are at it, cop that Scratch movie too! Especially if you are a DJ or want to become one. You won't be disappointed! Casual "Fear Itself" (1992 Demo)

Out of all of the dope Hip Hop collectives that have blessed us with their incredible music (and trust me there are alot), one of my all time favorites are The Hieroglyphics Crew coming straight out of Oakland, California. The Hieroglyphics consists of Del the Funkee Homosapien, Souls of Mischief (A-Plus, Opio, Tajai,& Phesto), Casual, Pep Love, Toure, Domino, and at one point Extra Prolific (Snupe & Mike G), Jay-Biz, Mike P & Kwam.

One of my FAVORITE albums to come out of the Hieroglyphics camp was Fear Itself ,the 1994 debut album by Casual. This album was DOPE from front to back with amazing production from Domino, Jay-Biz, Del, & even Casual himself. The album also featured dope guest verses from other members of the Hieroglyphics AND a guest verse from Saafir of Hobo Junction, who was the only NON-Hieroglyphics member to guest on the album. So for all of you who are familiar with the Saafir VS. Casual (Hieroglyphics / Hobo Junction) battle, you know that Casual and Saafir have a long history.

Due to the fact that I love Casuals' Fear Itself, I was very excited to get my hands on this 92' demo version of Fear Itself. At just over 19 minutes, this demo contains the original versions of some of my favorite songs off the commercial version of Fear Itself. For the most part, the songs sound the same as the final album. The beat and the lyrics are the same. But you will find minor differences in Casuals' delivery. Also the hook is different in "Thoughts Of The Thoughtful" and "Follow The Funk". The original version of "Who's It On" features the biggest difference. The demo version uses the same beat but features different lyrics from Casual and Pep Love. And Opio rhymes on the original version instead of Del the Funkee Homosapien. The demo version of "Who's It On" also features nice scratching. :)

So there you have it! Like most demos, the sound quality isn't the best (the sound even goes out for 3 seconds during one of the songs). But in no way does it take away from the fact that this 1992 demo is DOPE! So to all of my Hiero & Hip Hop heads click here to own a piece of Hip Hop history!

R.I.P DJ Tapedek

Unfortunately I received some disturbing news last night that one of Chicago's very own DJ's, producers, blogger, and most importantly all around good human being recently passed away. Family and close friends knew him as Christian (Chris). Fans (like myself) and the rest of the world knew him as DJ Tapedek.

I never had the honor of meeting him personally. My cousin, who was a good friend of his, informed me to "hook up with him" due to our similiar love and passion of music. As soon as we began to follow each other on twitter it was "on"! Ironically, besides the time I advised him to cop a new keyboard that he was eyeing instead of buying a new phone, we rarely talked about music on twitter. We had talks about life. One of my favorite conversations we had was on the topic of the value of family and how our elders are the best teachers and primary source of getting an education on history. So in the grand scheme of things it appears we had much more in common than just a love for music.

I regret that I never had the opportunity to meet DJ Tapedek. Based on the overflow of love that he has received in the last 24 hours on his facebook and twitter page I KNOW he was an incredible human being. I would like to give my condolences to his family as well as friends and ask that God blesses and covers them during this difficult time.

O.C Demo Tape (1991) Free Download!

O.C of D.I.T.C (Diggin in the Crates) was first introduced to the world in 1991 on the single Fudge Pudge by Organized Konfusion. Three years later he dropped his critically acclaimed (and VERY DOPE I might add) debut album Word...Life in 1994. Since then he has continued to release quality Hip Hop music like his solid follow up album Jewelz in 1997 and the limited, Japan only, official release Starchild in 2005.

So because I'm such a fan of O.C's music, I was excited to get my hands on his demo tape. One of the things that I love about demo tapes is that it allows you to hear songs in its most pure yet unpolished state. And this O.C demo tape is no exception. The sound quality isn't the best but that's usually the reality when dealing with most demo tapes. Regardless, that doesn't take away from the overall quality and dopeness of this demo tape.

This demo tape features 5 songs. Including the original version of Ozone which was featured on Word...Life. A quick note, this demo tape states that it was recorded in 1991. That may have been the case for some of the songs but on A Clear Day O.C makes a reference to 9-5. So who knows when this demo tape was ACTUALLY recorded. BUT WHO CARES?!?! lol It's DOPE! In my opinion, there isn't enough female representation of Hip Hop on the radio. That's why on this special "Ladies 1st Edition" of Vinyl Vybz with DJ HasH, I put the spotlight on female MC's. It's long overdue, wouldn't you agree? This past Tuesday (12/15/09) I played TWO hours of Hip Hop from female MC's ONLY! Not too many DJ's are doing that. Honestly, I don't know ANY other DJ's that are doing that. :) This is history in the making on Vinyl Vybz.
